We are in love with this Boot Camp idea for practicing place value! Featured by Susan over at Thank God It's First Grade, it's perfect for keeping your kiddos engaged while instilling the concept of place value into their little minds. What kiddo wouldn't love to be in 'boot camp' for the morning? It's sure to be a welcomed change from your typical day-to-day math review!

Place Value Boot Camp

Susan got her inspiration for the idea from the Teacher Tipster and features his video at the top of her post here. He put together a great boot camp-inspired song to help his students memorize the concept of place value. Each year Susan and her teacher buddy take their kiddos to the great outdoors for place value boot camp where they practice the song and the concept of place value.

If the weather isn't cooperating, or you find yourself in the middle of winter, you could always use your school gym if available (anthything to get out of the classroom for a bit!).

Spend about two days in 'boot camp' and then hold a scavenger hunt in your classroom. Susan provides everything you will need to do the hunt as a FREEbie!

Hang the place value examples around your classroom and provide students with a recording worksheet. They can work individually or in pairs to document the place values (tens and ones) of each example.

And in keeping with the boot camp theme, there are also six cards to hang around the room that ask students to complete simple exercises (push ups, jumping jacks, etc.).
