Ever wonder about the effects of synthetic food additives on our bodies? Yellow #5, also known as tartrazine, is a synthetic dye found in food coloring - food coloring that is used in many common foods like soda, mustard, etc. Yellow #5, among other additives, has led to lots of controversy because of its links to potential health problems. Sixth grade student, Taylor Pratt, wondered about the effects of tartrazine and designed a great experiment using a homemade maze and four mice purchased from the pet store!

While this project is more involved and takes more materials, if you have the time and a willing carpenter, we think this is a fantastic exploration - specifically because you'll end up with some great pets at the end of it!
