Puppets in Preschool

By Kayla • April 3, 2018

Need some new materials for your pretend corner? Check out these dramatic play hand puppets posted by Deborah J. Stewart of Teach Preschool! Not only will your students have a great time making them, they will have a purpose far beyond craft time!

A note for teachers who are crafty, but not handy with a needle and thread: While you can certainly attempt to sew your own felt hand puppets, it may be easier to purchase a puppet kit from your local craft store or online teacher store and focus on putting together the accents.

Supplies You'll Need
- Felt sheets in assorted colors
- Craft embellishments (e.g. ric rac, gems, sequins, etc.)
- School glue From the felt, create various geometric shapes and patterns. Make sure that you create shapes that will work for puppet tongues and ears as well. If your students are skilled enough to work with scissors, consider providing a few pre-made shapes, but letting them do most of the work themselves. When they've chosen (or created) all the pieces and embellishments they need, provide them with school glue and invite them to get busy bringing their puppet to "life"!

These crafts are brilliant for free play, for story telling practice, for use during circle time, etc.
