Planning a bird unit this spring? Along with observation journals, bird books, and tracks of bird calls, it's always nice to plan a few arts and crafts to provide a fun and relaxing time where students can extend/process their learning. Jolanthe over at Homeschool Creations shares five projects that would make a great addition to your plans!

Bird Houses

Simple, yet fun and functional, you can find inexpensive wooden birdhouses at the craft store that can be painted/decorated and then sent home for students, their families, and the birds in their backyards to enjoy!

Rice Krispie Nests

Any project that ends with a treat is sure to be a hit with your kiddos! After talking about nests and nest design (i.e. what materials make the best nests, how different birds make different types of nests, etc.), set your students free with rice krispie treats, some coconut flakes, and jelly bean eggs to create their own nest replica!

Footprint Robins

We love sensory art experiences and this simple footprint robin is a great way to get some sensory fun without a lot of prep. Your students will love having their feet painted; the soft, smooth paint brush tickling their foot and the cool paint squishing through their toes! To create your own robin, use brown craft paint to create a foot print on white craft paper, then add a red craft paint 'belly', an orange construction paper beak, legs drawn with an orange crayon, and an eye added with black permanent marker once the footprint dries!

Paper Plate Bird & Nest

How fun is this craft!? We love the three-dimensional bird and the mixed media nest! To recreate the nest, have students paint a paper plate with brown craft paint and then, while the paint is still wet, add strips of brown construction paper. Finally, glue half of a plastic Easter egg to create the bird's body and use construction paper to create the wings and beak!

Chalk Pastel Chickadees

Markers, colored pencils, and crayons are great, but exploring different are tools with your kiddos can be a lot of fun! Jolanthe and her kiddos followed a tutorial for drawing chalk pastel chickadees and we think this would be a great arts and crafts component for your bird unit! Practicing following directions, learning about a new bird, and exploring a new art tool - this craft hits the trifecta!
