Marie Carney Hossfeld, contributor to the web-based teacher's resource Lesson Planet, provides insight on creating interesting lessons about our country's history and the Declaration of Independence.\n\nFor use with children between the ages of eight and fourteen, Hossfeld suggests PBS's animated series entitled \"Liberty's Kids\" with follows the birth of America through the lives of three teenagers growing up during the American Revolution. While the entire series allows children to view this period of history in a new light, Hossfeld highly recommends using Episode 13, \"The First Fourth of July\", which examines the process by which the Declaration of Independence was drafted, polished, and signed. It is important for your students to realize that what Jefferson's proposal of a government of the people, by the people, and for the people was a radical concept and was met with great opposition. It is also important for students to understand that our founding father's laid their lives on the line for their beliefs. For a classroom happenings board, write events, dates, and times on each individual egg. If creating a welcome board, place a student's name at the top of each egg, add their picture from the previous school year, and create questions with blanks to be filled in by the student on the first day of class (e.g. \"My favorite color is ________\", \"I have ___ siblings\", \"My favorite subject is _______\", etc.). 2) The Extras. Mrs. Naylor added a joke \"skillet\" where the class got \"all cracked up\". This could be a great way of giving the students a \"silly\" break between particularly hard lessons. Many fruit trees blossom in the spring, ripen during the summer months, and are harvested in the fall. For your spring\/summer board, consider adding a mixture of blossoms and maturing fruits so your students make the life cycle connection. For example, to create an apple tree; cut 5-inch squares of white art tissue paper {adding some iridescent white glitter detailing if desired}, gathering and twisting the middle to create apple blossoms, then cut 4-inch circles of red construction paper, adding one or two green leaf cutouts to each to create maturing apples. On the paper apples, script or use word processing software to label them with the various topics, character traits, and concepts to be explored in the spring unit {i.e. perseverance, plant life cycle, etc.}. We thought the presidents depicted on Mount Rushmore would be a nice selection - George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt. Washington symbolizes the BIRTH of our country, Jefferson the EXPANSION, Lincoln the PRESERVATION, and Roosevelt the DEVELOPMENT of our nation.] We suggest finding a photo or clip art image of each president that can be enlarged and traced onto the bulletin board paper using your classroom projector system. You could also freehand the figures if you're feeling particularly artsy! We love that Kacey's cutout is actually 6' 4\" - the height of President Lincoln - and would highly recommend finding the stats for each president and enlarging the images accordingly. With the figures drawn (improvising where need be) and recognizable details added where appropriate (i.e. Lincoln's top hat, Washington in a tricorn hat, etc.), use acrylic craft paints, crayons, or other graphic art tools to color the figures!
