Boost your preschoolers counting skills, while introducing the concepts of 'odd v. even' and 'less v. more' with this fun ocean animal themed math game from The Homeschool Den. Best played in pairs, here's the premise...

  • To start the round, have each child take a turn rolling the die and, based on the numeral/number of dots displayed, count out the correct number of ocean animal cards to place on their mat.
  • Next, spin the homemade spinner. The marker will land on one of four options - odd, even, less, more. In general, the student whose pile of animal cards fits the criteria displayed, wins. It may be possible for both students to have an odd number of cards or an even number of cards. In this case, there is a tie.

Other considerations...

  • Having your students cut out the animal cards themselves is a great fine motor activity!
  • Printing two sets of animal cards creates the opportunity for your kiddos to test their memory/matching skills with a game of concentration.
  • By leaving the animal cards intact {i.e. as a full sheet}, students can play a grid game. See the full post at The Homeschool Den for directions.
