[NOTE: Be sure to check student allergies before committing to this exercise. You may need to revise 'candidates' and even 'tests' to accommodate these students!]\n\nOnce each child has settled on their favorite candidate, Downs suggests grouping students by preference, inviting them to make 'campaign posters' and share with the class why they think this 'candidate' is the best. At the end of the day, hold an election. In reality, to keep passengers safe during travel, pilots are responsible for numerous flight checks where they verify that the instruments, controls, engines, and other flight systems on their craft are functioning the way they should, checking off each flight system as they finish inspection. To properly perform this task, pilots must be observant, knowledgeable of their craft, and excel at performing step-by-step processes. To help your preschoolers learn these same skills, set up a mock 'flight check' exercise. Present them with a completed Styrofoam airplane (you can find a craft template \u003ca href=\"http:\/\/familycrafts.about.com\/od\/airtransportation\/a\/styrofoamairplane.htm\" data-ad-id=\"post-content-link\"\u003ehere\u003c\/a\u003e - you'll just need to create a smaller foam piece to attach to the tail as the picture shows above). Have them observe the shape of each piece as well as how each part fits together. Create and display four different plane models around the classroom. On three of the four models, 'mistakenly' attach a part wrong (e.g. install the body of the plane upside down, attach the wings severely off center, bend the tail down, etc.). Do you think it will affect any animals living there?\", etc.), this format will give you the ability to assess students' reasoning skills and promote good decision making processes. We had several things going on and students worked through them at their own pace...\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eAt the beginning of the night when the kiddos arrived, we presented them with a world map poster - having a little discussion about how maps work {i.e. the blue stuff is water, here's where we live, etc.} and inviting them to guess where they thought India might be located. They marked their guess with a small circle sticker and then we headed off to chapel. This same map was then moved to the sight station where, when we returned, I showed them where India is and we determined who had guessed the closest. We also located India on a globe {my kiddos were amazed to see that India is on the other side of the world!} and found\/colored India on a map of southern Asia.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eI wanted the kids to be able to connect to the lesson, so I attempted to tap into their knowledge base by comparing and contrasting various things {that they have experience with} in America and India - food, housing, clothing, currency, church\/religion, etc. Using file folders, I created flip \"books\". The front flap displayed a photo from the United States, the inside of the folder revealed a print from India. Maddy {my helper} and I made ourselves available to answer questions and talk to the kiddos about what they were seeing, but we didn't want it to be too guided. It was quite funny to watch the kids' faces as they caught a whiff of some of the more potent spices. After {carefully!} passing around the jars for a quick sniff, I offered each child a magnifying glass and we took a look at the spices up close. I asked them what colors they could see in each of the mixtures - the chili powder worked best for this exercise - and it was fun watching them confer with each other.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs an extra, I added some sandalwood incense oil to the station, explaining to the children what incense is used for, what forms it comes in, etc.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe Sounds of India\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSince our night was decently short, our \"sounds of India\" station was super informal. India has all sorts of climates\/landscapes so we chose to focus on the \u003cem\u003etropical\u003c\/em\u003e fruits that students were more familiar with.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI set out each type of fruit onto colorful plates and added labels, then invited each child to fix a plate.
