Consider transforming the classroom into a small jet (e.g. push the desks out of the way and line up desk chairs in two long rows with an aisle in between - in one row form groupings of two chairs and in the other create groupings of three chairs. Label each different row of chairs, as well as each seat, and fashion fake 'seat belts' for students to secure as they board.) As students enter the classroom, provide them with a ticket and, after stowing any 'carry-on items' in their desk, help them find their assigned seat. In reality, to keep passengers safe during travel, pilots are responsible for numerous flight checks where they verify that the instruments, controls, engines, and other flight systems on their craft are functioning the way they should, checking off each flight system as they finish inspection. To properly perform this task, pilots must be observant, knowledgeable of their craft, and excel at performing step-by-step processes. To help your preschoolers learn these same skills, set up a mock 'flight check' exercise. Present them with a completed Styrofoam airplane (you can find a craft template \u003ca href=\"http:\/\/familycrafts.about.com\/od\/airtransportation\/a\/styrofoamairplane.htm\" data-ad-id=\"post-content-link\"\u003ehere\u003c\/a\u003e - you'll just need to create a smaller foam piece to attach to the tail as the picture shows above). Have them observe the shape of each piece as well as how each part fits together. Create and display four different plane models around the classroom. On three of the four models, 'mistakenly' attach a part wrong (e.g. install the body of the plane upside down, attach the wings severely off center, bend the tail down, etc.). Invite them to listen carefully, taking note of each of the woodland creatures who finds (and wiggles into!) Nikki's lost mitten. At the story's conclusion, test your students' listening skills by completing a sequencing activity where students are provided with mitten and animal cutouts then asked to place the creatures inside the mitten in the correct order. Once again, you can use one of Brett's printables and word processing software to create and print a project worksheet onto sturdy card stock (that will stand up to the demands of decorating!). Preschool offers a great setting for your students to learn about feelings, as well as provide them with the tools to deal with emotions in a positive and healthy way. Pearce suggests using Seuss's book to associate emotions with colors - having students act out each color (i.e. Yellow is the color of sunshine and is most often associated with joy and happiness, as well as intellect and energy. Have them create at least one creature from each basic animal group - invertebrate, amphibian, reptile, bird, fish, and mammal. You, of course, will need to explain the characteristics of each group and give handouts of examples. To demonstrate this concept, at the beginning of class, submerge a hard boiled egg into a glass or jar of Coke. At the end of the day, pull the egg from the liquid and have students describe what has happened. Most will notice that the egg, normally white, has been stained a dull brown color. Invite them to eat the cookies then file one at a time to the mirror to see what their teeth look like. Have students clear their mouth then provide them with several apple slices. Complete the same process and discuss the differences between the two snacks.
