Outdoor Adventures & Summer Fun!
We just love the idea of learning outdoors and came across three activities you and your kiddos should try this summer!
Nature Scavenger Hunt
The first comes from Rachel at Sun Scholars, who invites moms and teachers to take their kids out to the backyard/schoolyard, a nearby park, or campground to embark on a nature scavenger hunt! Not only is this a great way to help your little scientists learn about the various natural elements {plants, seeds, etc.} that are found in your region, it will help them hone observation skills, learn to work in a team setting, and hopefully, offer them a break from the stuffy classroom! [NOTE: Along with the "hunting", Rachel recommends having your kiddos "scavenge" - collecting samples of the items on their list. These samples are fantastic for extra exploration indoors after the scavenger hunt. Set out trays of microscopes and magnifying glasses, having your little explorers check out their items up close!]
Color Walk
Wondering what to do with the old paint chips you have lying around? Try this fantastic color walk activity from Darcy at No Monsters in My Bed. With samples in hand, your kiddos will love holding the chips up to objects around your yard/park for comparison, in an attempt to make a match. When a color match is made, invite your kiddo to pen the name of the object onto the paint chip. It's sure to be a colorful good time!
Letterboxing
Another fantastic outdoor adventure to try this summer is 'letterboxing' - "an intriguing mix of treasure hunting, art, navigation, and exploring interesting, scenic, and sometimes remote places" [Letterboxing in America]. Search online to find boxes in your area and head out on an adventure! [NOTE: As Beth of Acorn Pies and her kiddos found out, some of the listed boxes had either been removed or lost, so it might be a good idea to make sure they're still there before dragging the little ones along!] For more information on letterboxing, be sure to visit: Letterboxing North America.
Get out and explore this summer with these exciting activities - your kiddos are sure to love these unique nature experiences!
