Feathers, Fine Motor Skills, & Seuss!
Today is Dr. Seuss's birthday - a great time to kick-off your Seuss unit! If you're looking for additional activities for your centers, check out these fun tot trays from Sierra over at H is for Homeschooling. We especially love The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins inspired fine motor skill tray... Colors. Fine motor skills. Numeral recognition. Counting. This activity provides an opportunity for your kiddos to practice numerous skill sets. And, of course, we love that the exercise was created using items from the recycle bin! To create the activity, Sierra used recycled yogurt cups - color coding them, then scripting a different numeral and poking the corresponding number of holes on the top of each. To complete the activity, she invited her kiddos to...
- Identify the color of the hat and select matching feathers
- Identify the numeral on the top of the hat
- Count out the appropriate number of feathers
- Place the feathers in the holes on the top of the hat
Other considerations...
We've seen these fine motor builders floating around Pinterest - and even posted about the activity before here. Instead of yogurt cups, you might consider creating hats from recycled oatmeal or Pringles containers. Punching holes in the top and adding colored hole reinforcements around each opening, you could have students count out and thread colored chenille stems through the holes.
