Have them illustrate the scene on a 4\" x 4\" square of white paper, then mount it on a 5\" x 5\" square of colored construction paper. As escaped slaves moved from location to location, they relied on secret coded messages {many historians believe these coded messages were sewn into quilts} to direct them to safe passage.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWithout maps, directions, or other navigational instruments, attempting to find their way on an unknown route was dangerous and difficult.
