When her unit on contractions fell over the week of Halloween, Betsy McKnight, fourth grade teacher and bulletin board contributor to Izzyshare, found herself in a unique position. Instead of allowing the themes to remain mutually exclusive, she incorporated the two inventing "Creepy Contractions"!

Creepy Contractions Activity

You can do this activity one of two ways: find a pre-designed haunted house coloring page and have your students build from there or provide construction paper for your students to design their own house. However you decide to do it, make sure the house design has plenty of windows.

Encourage your students to color or decorate their creations and cut them out. Next, have them carefully use scissors (kids safety scissors depending on their age) to create window flaps that will open out. This part may be tricky so make sure you're around to assist. With this successfully accomplished, mount the cutout onto a piece of construction paper (black, orange, or yellow to keep with the Halloween theme). As the glue dries, invite your students to use brainstorm a list of common contractions and the original words they're derived from.

Once everything is set, have your students finish the exercise by neatly penning the contractions on the front of the house windows then open the flaps and write the original words on the construction paper underneath. Not only are these make festive classroom decorations, they're also perfect study aids!
