Or, print out the lyrics and recite them slowly, inviting your students to repeat them after you for full "digestion" of the material!

You might also consider "demonstrating" the concept of echolocation with a game. Try a "batty" version of Marco Polo where a student volunteer gets blindfolded, is placed in the center of the game play area, and pretends to be a "bat", while the rest of the class pretend to be "insects". The blindfolded volunteer calls out "beep, beep" to which the insects, with full sight and instructions to keep moving around the play area, must respond "buzz, buzz". Relying solely on their ears, the bat then attempts to "catch" their prey. Once tagged, insects must return to the "bat cave" (their desk) until the bat is full (set a limit of three or four insects) and then another student volunteer gets the chance to be the bat.

To finish up the science lesson on bats, consider creating a slideshow of various bats native to your area or region - including both pictures and audio clips found on the internet - for your students to examine and discuss. For regular classroom use, consider using a fall-themed trimmer or a complimentary solid color bordette in a fall color. If you have rolls of bulletin board paper or construction paper in assorted colors and can create simple shapes, your bulletin board scarecrow will be a snap! Begin by cutting a large square from red or orange paper. This will be used as the base for the sign held by the scarecrow. Use word processing software or dark blue paint to script your chosen title onto white paper, then mount the sign onto the construction paper square, making sure to leave a border of color. Create the rest of the pieces for your scarecrow based on the dimensions/size of the sign. You'll need two "blue jean" rectangle legs, one large tan circle head, eight small tan oval "fingers", one large black oval (cut in half to create boots), and one large brown hat. Assemble these simple scarecrow pieces then use assorted colors of paper to add embellishments - small strips of yellow paper (slightly crinkled) to add "straw" detailing at the hem of each pant leg and a mop of hair on the scarecrow's head, slightly uneven squares of paper in orange, green, purple, etc. to create patches on the scarecrow's pants ("sewn" on with black yarn), and a small red or yellow flower to adorn the scarecrow's hat. Draw a face on your scarecrow and you're all set! 2) The Crows. Once again, if you can create simple shapes, you can create crows for your board. You'll need one large black circle body, one small black circle head, one small orange triangle beak, and eyes made from small black and white circles. King uses these cutouts as embellishments, but you might consider displaying student names on the crows with white or metallic paint pens. 3) The Leaves. Create a leaf template from card stock, using it to trace and cut out leaves from construction paper in fall colors (e.g. red, orange, yellow, brown, and green). Use these cutouts as King did to display student names or use them as a fun fall accent or border.

We love King's festive bulletin board decor and your students are sure to appreciate it as well! The (very talented!) creator of this bulletin board decoration used oil pastels and advanced shading techniques to create this tree. If this seems daunting, consider creating a simpler tree with brown construction paper or brown bulletin board paper. Either use an overhead projector to enlarge and trace the shape of a basket onto the paper or, if you don’t want to mess with a projector, you can freehand it. It isn’t terribly difficult. 2) The Night Sky. Again, the bulletin board designer used oil pastels to create the brilliant moon, but you can certainly use plain yellow construction paper or yellow background paper. To add a twinkle to the sky, place small silver star stickers around the tree and board. 3) The Leaves. Create a simple leaf template from card stock, using it to trace and cut leaves from construction paper in fall colors (e.g. red, orange, yellow, and brown). 'Scatter' these around the base of the tree.

While the design seems simple, we think this bulletin board display would make a spectacular addition to your classroom this fall! Draw a large spider shape onto a piece of black bulletin board paper, large sheet of black poster board, or sheets of black construction paper that have been taped together. Cut out and complete using white, purple, and black construction paper to construct goofy spider eyes and a mouth. 3) The Spider Web. String up orange fake spider webbing (like the kind used to decorate bushes!). 4) The Details. Because of it's Halloween theme, the creator added several pumpkins and fall leaves. You could free-hand a template for these or you might also be able to find a black and white clip-art print online or through your word processing software that could then be printed onto colored card stock and cut out. 5) The Lettering. Unlike other boards, the creator of this display uses the title letters as artwork as well. Laurie then added a band of lighter orange paper and a sunflower to create visual interest and differentiate the brim from the rest of the hat. The design is super cute, but remember that you can customize the hat as you please! Add a colorful patch somewhere on the hat, use a fall leaf or colorful button cutout instead of a sunflower to decorate the band, etc.

Next, cut several strips of yellow bulletin board paper and arrange them to create the scarecrow's straw hair. Just as Christopher Columbus relied on navigational instruments on his voyage across the Atlantic, your little explorers can use their newly created compasses to practice 'navigating' themselves around the room, school yard, etc. Not only can they use their new tools during pretend play - and, of course, learn a little more about the science of how a compass works as they help construct it - there are tons of games that can be played with a compass! While you'll have to be mindful of your students' skill level, here are a few sites where you can find compass games/activities: Queen Anne Cub Scouts and Compass Learning Games {from eHow}.

Don't forget to visit TLC Family for this fun Columbus Day science activity!

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1418/0968/products/science-projects-for-kids-magnets-and-metal-4.jpg?v=1522782034
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1418/0968/collections/silly_20Spiders_20Line_20tracing_20worksheet-straight.jpg?v=1530027922
