Cut two large tree shapes - complete with trunk and branches - from brown bulletin board paper. If you plan to freehand the shape, you can always cut out one tree shape and use it to trace and cut a second tree shape! If you find a clip art image that you like, simply use your classroom projector system to enlarge and trace the image twice. Arrange the trees on either side of the board. Cut a strip of green bulletin board paper, using scissors to create the look of 'grass' along the top edge, and mount the strip to the bottom of the board between the trees. 2) The Carrots. Find a carrot coloring page - printing the pieces onto orange and green construction paper, assembling the cutouts around the bulletin board, and adding pictures of your kiddos to each of the cutouts. Print an 8\" x 10\" of the week's feature book cover {you can usually find these online}, mount it to a piece of colored construction paper, and laminate. Place the book cover in the center of the board. 2) The Symbols. Beth provides links to both the thumbs up and thumbs down symbols so all you need to do is download, cut, and laminate. These can be attached to either side of the book cover. 3) The Critics. Have a student photo shoot, taking a head shot of each child to develop and use with the board. Keep the photos in a recycled plastic pamphlet display {mounted to the board under the book cover} labeled with \"Waiting for the Book\". Once the student has read the book, invite them to locate their picture and place it beneath the proper opinion heading. Since Beth's white board was magnetic, she attached a small magnetic strip to the back of each picture. Traditional boards are not magnetic, so consider finding some scrapbooking glue dots that will temporarily stick the photos to the board. Each week, as you change the book selection, just peel the glue dot off the back of the photo and place them back in the pamphlet holder.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ul\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAny activity that will get your students to invest in the book {even if the final outcome is a picture in the \"Dislike\" column} will assist in building reading skills, teach students about making comparisons, and help your kids to learn how to form and share their opinion. Create leaf cutouts from various shades of green construction paper. Freehand the leaves or find and print templates onto card stock to trace and cut. Use markers to add detailing to the leaves. 2) The Very Hungry Caterpillar. The original caterpillar looks textured, but you could also make a simple cutout from background paper. Start with a full cutout of the caterpillar body {freehand it onto a piece of light green background paper or use your classroom projector system to enlarge and trace a clip art image}. Divide the cutout into sections (like those on the body of a caterpillar) and, using the book cover as a guide, plan which sections will be light green, dark green, and turquoise. Cut, trace, and replace the dark green and turquoise sections on the cutout, or fashion a piece of colored construction paper to be glued directly to the cutout. Create the caterpillar head {an oval with antennae cut from red paper} and add facial detailing - green and yellow circle eyes and a blue nose. Add some feet and your very hungry caterpillar is ready to be attached to the board. 3) The Extras. The original creator filled in the extra spaces with other critters and 'twigs'. Add some construction paper ladybug, butterfly, worm, and other colorful cutouts where needed. Freehand or trace a tree cutout {trunk and branches} onto brown bulletin board paper. On green background paper, draw or trace generalized leaves\/foliage for the tree (the result looks kind of like a cloud shape). If you're worried about your skills as an artist, you might try finding a black and white clip art image online to enlarge using your classroom projector system. Next, trace and cut leaf shapes from construction paper in various shades of green. 2) The Flowers. Using various flower templates {drawn or found online}, trace spring flower cutouts onto construction paper in various spring shades. In the original design, the individual petals of the flowers were cut out\/separated in order to create two-tone flowers (i.e. light pink\/dark pink, light blue\/dark blue, etc.). Script the names of each student with a spring birthday onto a petal. Cut out green construction paper stems and leaves and mount the flowers to the board around the tree.
