Janet, a volunteer art teacher in San Diego, offers a way to bring the symbol of our nation to life with this awesome flag mural.

It may take a bit of prep time, but is well worth it. To begin, connect thirty-two 8.5” x 11” sheets of craft paper to make a mural that is eight sheets across and four sheets high. The total dimensions should equal 68” x 44”. Draw a pencil version of the United States flag. This can be as detailed as you want. For older students, it would be more challenging if you created a flag that wasn’t stagnant. One with loose folds as it hangs from a flagpole or a depiction of it rippling in the wind are great options in this case.

After you’ve created the base, assign a specific piece to each student. In a nutshell, your students will use the white paint to place a full hand print onto their ornament (be sure to keep the plastic ornament trays for drying), then use paint pens to create a snowman from each of their fingers. For small children, we suggest you call in cavalry. While they're certain to be able to complete the first step, the paint pen detailing may be beyond their skill level so ask for the help of room mothers, older student aides, or other teachers on the floor (this could be a fun floor/collective craft) to help you finish the crafts.

You might also consider inviting an older art class to come to the room for a special "art session" where each of your students is assigned to an artist and can dictate design (i.e. hat colors, scarf design, etc.) while the older student creates the snowmen. In this way, your students will feel like they're playing a bigger part in creating the ornament, will practice articulating ideas and giving specific directions, as well as learn to work with colors (in an artistic sense!) and a partner. Not only will this benefit the younger children, it can be a great exercise for the older students too (one that their art teacher might not be able to pass up!)! As it's name might suggest, this integral part of the freedom movement that helped transport escaped slaves from the Southern States to the North, was neither underground nor a set of physical train tracks. It was, in fact, a network of people - other slaves, free blacks, and white abolitionists - that risked their lives, resources, and freedom to aid slaves in search of a new life. Secrecy was key for all involved and there were many risks, as well as barriers, to contend with. One obstacle - and not even the most perilous - was the literacy barrier.

Because it was against the law to teach a slave to read or write, those involved in the Underground Railroad had to create codes that would transcend the literacy barrier. Memorized symbols, spirituals, code phrases/words, etc. offered a means of communication between slaves and those who worked to aid them. These codes, unknown to slave owners, provided secrecy and a way to pass messages, warnings, and instructions. Many historians believe that these codes were hidden in quilts, a common household item that would not draw attention, and today call them freedom quilts because of their role in helping many escape the bonds of slavery.

Freedom Quilts

We love this display created by Molly and her students over at Lessons with Laughter.
