Create the rocket from a large piece of cardboard. Cover it with bright fabric scraps, pieces of crafting paper, or bulletin board paper. Create several sizes of star templates by hand, using these to trace and cut star shapes to decorate the board, find a black and white clip art print online or with word processing software printing various sizes onto white card stock and cut out, or (if you have one) use a die cut machine to create star cutouts. 3) Rope Lighting. This feature is obviously optional. You could find a thick piece of cording, paint it, and attach it to the board to add a bit of extra color or create a border for the message using star cutouts, etc., but if you happen to have rope light, this can be attached to the board using push pins (sandwich the cord between two of them - \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003edon't puncture the light\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e) and you'll have to use black fabric to cover the bulletin board in order hide the extension cord needed to make the lights fully functional, but it's certainly well worth the effort! The metaphor of \"fillers\" and \"dippers\" provides children with a visual of how our behavior and words - good and bad - affect the people around us as well as ourselves. As McCloud says, \"Bucket fillng is easy. It doesn't cost any money. It doesn't take much time. It doesn't matter how young or old you are. Bucket filing makes everyone feel good\". And, in a classroom where kindness, other-centeredness, responsibility, respect, generosity, and fairness are seen, your students are sure to grow as students and individuals. Rachelle's bulletin board provides a \"bucket\" for each student as well as positive message forms that classmates can use to \"fill\" them throughout the week. In addition to these messages, student behavior and actions are monitored in class for \"filling\" or \"dipping\" qualities. Along with positive message forms, you might consider creating teacher awards to be filled out when a kind act is witness. These can be attached to either side of the book cover. 3) The Critics. Have a student photo shoot, taking a head shot of each child to develop and use with the board. Keep the photos in a recycled plastic pamphlet display {mounted to the board under the book cover} labeled with \"Waiting for the Book\". Once the student has read the book, invite them to locate their picture and place it beneath the proper opinion heading. Since Beth's white board was magnetic, she attached a small magnetic strip to the back of each picture. Traditional boards are not magnetic, so consider finding some scrapbooking glue dots that will temporarily stick the photos to the board. If you're worried about your skills as an artist, you might try finding a black and white clip art image online to enlarge using your classroom projector system. Next, trace and cut leaf shapes from construction paper in various shades of green. 2) The Flowers. Using various flower templates {drawn or found online}, trace spring flower cutouts onto construction paper in various spring shades. In the original design, the individual petals of the flowers were cut out\/separated in order to create two-tone flowers (i.e. light pink\/dark pink, light blue\/dark blue, etc.). Script the names of each student with a spring birthday onto a petal. Cut out green construction paper stems and leaves and mount the flowers to the board around the tree. Using a green marker, draw or trace actual leaf shapes haphazardly on the green foliage cutouts. Place the trunk in the middle of the board and arrange the 'leaves' around the top. 2) The Blossoms\/Fruit. Many fruit trees blossom in the spring, ripen during the summer months, and are harvested in the fall. For your spring\/summer board, consider adding a mixture of blossoms and maturing fruits so your students make the life cycle connection. For example, to create an apple tree; cut 5-inch squares of white art tissue paper {adding some iridescent white glitter detailing if desired}, gathering and twisting the middle to create apple blossoms, then cut 4-inch circles of red construction paper, adding one or two green leaf cutouts to each to create maturing apples. On the paper apples, script or use word processing software to label them with the various topics, character traits, and concepts to be explored in the spring unit {i.e. perseverance, plant life cycle, etc.}. Arrange both the blossoms and fruit cutouts on the tree.
