The Lorax
Can you believe that it’s almost March?! March is one of our favorite months because we get to pull out all of our favorite Dr. Seuss activities to celebrate his birthday and Read Across America! This year, we’re taking it book by book and hope you’ll be able to find something that your kiddos will enjoy…
The Lorax
While The Lorax is one of Seuss' longer tales, with vocabulary and themes/lessons that will likely need to be explained to your kinders, we still think this is a great selection to include in your Seuss' birthday celebration/Read Across America lesson plans and are sure it will spark some great discussion with your kiddos! Here are some fun lessons to go along with the book that you might consider completing with your kinders...
Truffula Tree Anchor Chart. Help your kiddos review the story with this adorable anchor chart from Jodi over at Fun in First! Great for introducing {or reviewing} the elements of a story, this is a fun group activity that will help you and your kiddos get the heart - the true message - of The Lorax!
The Lorax Book v. Movie. Have a movie day! After reading both the book and watching the movie, work with your kinders to compare and contrast the stories. Carissa O'Leary created a fun Venn diagram with hula hoops {cute, right?!}. You might also consider creating shape anchor charts that overlap - i.e. a DVD and a book.
Poetry Journal Craftivity. Debi over at Just 4 Teachers shared this adorable poem and craft that would make a great entry in your kinders' poetry journals! {No poetry journal required, of course! You could simply attach the poem printout and pom pom/chenille stem truffula trees to a piece of colored construction paper to hang on the wall or send home.}
Truffula Tree Dominoes. Play some fun games with this FREE printable dominoes from ClassroomJr! Played like dominoes your kinders will hone visual discrimination and matching skills as they make a 'train' of tiles. You might also consider cutting the tiles apart in order to create a patterning game.
The Lorax Emergent Reader. Great for reviewing sight words and colors, this 23-page FREE emergent reader created by Jeannie over at Kindergarten Lifestyle, written in the familiar style of Eric Carle's Brown Bear, Brown Bear, offers a great way to build early reading skills!
Writing Craftivity. Provide your kiddos with printing practice, as well as creative writing practice, with this adorable prompt and craftivity from Kim over at Saylor's Log! Keeping in mind the theme/message of the story, your students will have the opportunity to write about what they would do if the Once-ler entrusted them with the last truffula seed - a great way to sum up your Lorax lessons!
We hope these great resources help you plan your Dr. Seuss lessons!
