We are amazed at the creativity that went into making this lopsided birthday cake for the quirky author! Similar to creating a snowman, begin by cutting out each layer of the cake (a combination of rectangles and squares in various sizes) from white bulletin board paper. Next, create the \"icing\" decorations using the newly created cake pieces to make correct measurements. You'll need a 2\" strip of red construction or bulletin board paper with a scalloped edge for each layer as well as a 4\" strip of white construction or bulletin board paper with a curled fringe edge (fringed pieces should be 1\" wide and about 2\" long). While it may seem counter-intuitive, begin by assembling the cake's top layer first - adding the base, then attaching the detailing so that the red scalloped paper sticks out from beneath the curled white fringe. Attach the second and third layers the same way. 2) The Candles. Create birthday candles to add to each layer of the cake. Either create a traceable template from card stock or find a black and white clip art image that can be printed directly onto colored construction paper. Along with the small candles, fashion one large candle for the very top of the cake by cutting a toilet paper roll in half, decorating the outside with shiny blue paper (or painting it with metallic blue paint), and stuffing yellow cellophane or saran wrap into the top. 3) The Book Jackets. Decorate the rest of the board with Dr. Seuss book covers. Place the book cover in the center of the board. 2) The Symbols. Beth provides links to both the thumbs up and thumbs down symbols so all you need to do is download, cut, and laminate. These can be attached to either side of the book cover. 3) The Critics. Have a student photo shoot, taking a head shot of each child to develop and use with the board. Keep the photos in a recycled plastic pamphlet display {mounted to the board under the book cover} labeled with \"Waiting for the Book\". Once the student has read the book, invite them to locate their picture and place it beneath the proper opinion heading. Since Beth's white board was magnetic, she attached a small magnetic strip to the back of each picture. Traditional boards are not magnetic, so consider finding some scrapbooking glue dots that will temporarily stick the photos to the board. Start with a full cutout of the caterpillar body {freehand it onto a piece of light green background paper or use your classroom projector system to enlarge and trace a clip art image}. Divide the cutout into sections (like those on the body of a caterpillar) and, using the book cover as a guide, plan which sections will be light green, dark green, and turquoise. Cut, trace, and replace the dark green and turquoise sections on the cutout, or fashion a piece of colored construction paper to be glued directly to the cutout. Create the caterpillar head {an oval with antennae cut from red paper} and add facial detailing - green and yellow circle eyes and a blue nose. Add some feet and your very hungry caterpillar is ready to be attached to the board. 3) The Extras. The original creator filled in the extra spaces with other critters and 'twigs'. Cut them out and laminate them. Place half of a Velcro dot onto the back of each stripe and bow, attaching the other half to the appropriate spots on the Cat in the Hat cutouts. Mount the cutouts to the bulletin board, along with a name card scripted or printed with each students' name underneath.
