"Cool To Be Kind" Winter Character Building Bulletin Board

Winter Character Building Bulletin Board

Barbara Gruener - elementary counselor, character coach, and creator of The Corner On Character - is at it again and this time she's put together a wonderfully festive bulletin board display that invites kiddos to put kindness into action!

Inspired by David Curry, a special education teacher and peace educator who created a kindness chart/calendar, Barbara borrowed the idea and adapted it to fit a winter theme. {What's great is - this bulletin board could be adapted to fit any season, holiday, or theme throughout the year!}

How it works...

The hat worn by each snowman invites students to be concious of where/when they might show kindness to others - i.e. on the playground, in the classroom, in the hallways, and toward others. And, the buttons on each snowman offer suggestions as to how students might put kindness into action in these different scenarios. For example;

On the playground, you can show kindness by inviting someone who is playing alone to come play with you or let someone go ahead of you on the slide, etc!

Cool To Be Kind!

  • Background: Cover the entire board with royal blue bulletin board paper. {Use a white paint pen to add snowflakes!} Cut a strip of white bulletin board paper, using scissors to create a wavy top edge, and attach it along the bottom of the board to create 'snow'.
  • Title: "Cool To Be Kind!"
  • Border: Barbara used white bulletin board paper to create an icicle border along the top. You might also consider a complimentary colored/patterned border and/or winter themed trimmer.
  • Decoration: The snowmen are pretty simple to create. Barbara used scraps background paper and colored card stock/construction paper to create most of the cutouts, then added some fun dimensional elements - i.e. real sticks for arms and soft winter socks for scarves. While simple, we love her attention to every last detail; she the eyes from paper hearts and formed the smiles from paper stars! How fun is that!?
