As Allison says, they can be short or long, it really just depends on what you want. Provide your students with a piece of tape, placing it sticky side up at their work space, and instruct them to place streamers along one edge. Next, have your students roll the tape (there should still be an exposed sticky edge) around the dowel rod. Lastly, provide them with a red chenille stem and invite them to wind it around the handle of the dowel rod. On that same end, have them edge the \u003cem\u003eoutside\u003c\/em\u003e of the tube with glue and wrap a red streamer around it. Remind them that they'll be gluing only one edge of the streamer. About 3\/4 of it should dangle below the toilet paper roll. Also, the streamer will be many times longer than the circumference of the tube, so invite your students to continue gluing and wrapping until the streamer is fully connected. Once the crepe has dried, instruct them to use their craft scissors to fringe the streamer creating \"rocket flames\".\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNext, have your students cover the rocket body with blue card stock. Instruct them to measure and cut the paper to the size of the tube then glue it in place. Encourage them to hold the paper in place for a few minutes so that it has a chance to adhere or provide them with clothespins to keep the paper in place while drying. From white card stock, have your students trace and cut out a circle, use scissors to create a slit from the edge to the center, then overlap and glue the sides to create a cone. Invite them to fill their rockets with confetti then attach the cone to the top using double-sided tape. Lastly, provide your students with star stickers and invite them to decorate their rockets! Next, have your students bend the white sparkle stems so that they stick straight up, then begin to twist the red and blue chenille stems together. Ponnay suggests preparing five to six red crayons and four to five blue crayons for a nice rich color. Once fully melted, add three to four drops of real citronella oil and stir. Pour the melted red wax into your prepared canning jars. Ponnay suggests dividing the jars into four sections therefore the red wax will fill one-fourth of the jar. For a more festive appearance, cut pieces of patriotic ribbon and tape them to the bottom of the paper before adhering it to the roll. Several days before the actual photo shoot is to begin, assign each of the participating students with a shirt color to wear on the day of picture (red or white) and send a note home to parents to get them in the loop. [NOTE: As an alternative, you might just bring in a white and red t-shirt that students can put on over their school clothes when taking their picture.
