Next, you'll need a section of darker green bulletin board paper (enough to cover half of your bulletin board). On this length of paper, measure out nine equal sections. [NOTE: Each of these nine sections should be the same size as a marked section on the bulletin board.] Use scissors to separate each strip of paper, then attach them to the board to create the striped appearance of a football field. As it's name might suggest, this integral part of the freedom movement that helped transport escaped slaves from the Southern States to the North, was neither underground nor a set of physical train tracks. It was, in fact, a network of people - other slaves, free blacks, and white abolitionists - that risked their lives, resources, and freedom to aid slaves in search of a new life. Secrecy was key for all involved and there were many risks, as well as barriers, to contend with. One obstacle - and not even the most perilous - was the literacy barrier.

Because it was against the law to teach a slave to read or write, those involved in the Underground Railroad had to create codes that would transcend the literacy barrier. Memorized symbols, spirituals, code phrases/words, etc. offered a means of communication between slaves and those who worked to aid them. These codes, unknown to slave owners, provided secrecy and a way to pass messages, warnings, and instructions. Many historians believe that these codes were hidden in quilts, a common household item that would not draw attention, and today call them freedom quilts because of their role in helping many escape the bonds of slavery.

Freedom Quilts

We love this display created by Molly and her students over at Lessons with Laughter. Find black and white images of important historical figures and symbols - Mount Rushmore, the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Memorial, etc. To make the images bulletin board ready, you could: Use a poster maker to enlarge and print, take the images to your local office supply store and have them create posters, or {if you're brave!} use your classroom projector system to enlarge and trace the images onto white bulletin board paper - going over the drawn lines with a black permanent marker. Arrange the enlarged images around the bulletin board, creating a speech bubble or caption strip from white bulletin board paper for each image, and writing a fact in each. [NOTE: You could also use legal sized printer paper and a comic book font - like this one at DaFont.com - to create captions/bubbles similar to the original board.] 2) The Airplane. To create the airplane {that's part of the title}, we suggest checking out one of the these 3D paper airplane templates from Paper Model Airplane. Print the black and white version so you can color the design as desired, then assemble. Since you need a flat side to attach to the bulletin board, you'll only need to color/assemble the wing, tail stabilizer, and wheel for one side.
