Cover each of the tag board shapes with aluminum foil to make them look like wrapped Hershey kisses and mount a student's picture onto each. Add the candy tags, using block letters to label each with a student's name and coloring the letters in with a blue marker {reminiscent of an actual Hershey kiss candy}. 2) The Hearts. Create heart cutouts from watercolor paper or coffee filters. Invite students to use liquid water color paints to create vibrant patterns and swirls. When dry, mount the watercolor hearts onto construction paper in assorted Valentine's Day themed colors {red, pink, magenta, violet, etc}, cutting them out once more and leaving a border of colored paper. Arrange the hearts around the outside of the bulletin board. Or, as Mrs. Williams did, opt to use the hearts for a mini lesson on symmetry. Provide your kiddos with a white heart cutout inviting them to fold it in half, crease it well, and once opened, add drops of craft paint to one side of the fold. Instruct students to carefully refold the heart, gently pressing the two sides together. As it's name might suggest, this integral part of the freedom movement that helped transport escaped slaves from the Southern States to the North, was neither underground nor a set of physical train tracks. It was, in fact, a network of people - other slaves, free blacks, and white abolitionists - that risked their lives, resources, and freedom to aid slaves in search of a new life. Secrecy was key for all involved and there were many risks, as well as barriers, to contend with. One obstacle - and not even the most perilous - was the literacy barrier.

Because it was against the law to teach a slave to read or write, those involved in the Underground Railroad had to create codes that would transcend the literacy barrier. Memorized symbols, spirituals, code phrases/words, etc. offered a means of communication between slaves and those who worked to aid them. These codes, unknown to slave owners, provided secrecy and a way to pass messages, warnings, and instructions. Many historians believe that these codes were hidden in quilts, a common household item that would not draw attention, and today call them freedom quilts because of their role in helping many escape the bonds of slavery.

Freedom Quilts

We love this display created by Molly and her students over at Lessons with Laughter. Despite its name, it was neither underground nor a set of physical train tracks. It was, in fact, a network of people – free blacks, other slaves, and white abolitionists – who risked their lives, resources, and even their freedom to transport escaped slaves from the Southern States to the North. With its risks and obstacles, secrecy was key for all involved in the Underground Railroad.

One obstacle – and not even the most perilous – was the literacy barrier. Because it was against the law to teach a slave to read or write, those involved in the Underground Railroad had to create codes that would transcend the literacy barrier. These codes, in the form of memorized symbols, code phrases/words, and even spirituals, etc. were unknown to slave owners and provided a way to pass messages, warnings, and instructions. Many historians believe that these codes were hidden in quilts, a common household item that would not draw attention, and today call them freedom quilts because of their role in helping many escape the bonds of slavery.

Terry suggests having your kinders create their own freedom quilts.
