Flowers and trees begin to bud, baby animals are introduced into the world, and the earth wakes up from its dormant winter slumber. In the first stage, students will discover that butterflies start as eggs. They will be amazed to find out that a female butterfly can lay up to 1,000 eggs at a time and, to protect them from sunlight and predators, chooses to deposit them on the underside of a leaf. In seven to twenty days, the eggs begin to hatch, producing the subject of the next stage: caterpillars. In the second stage, the children will learn that, just like them, caterpillars eat to grow big and strong. They will also find that, unlike them, caterpillars spend most of their time eating and that, as they expand, they shed layers of skin in a process called molting to make way for this expansion.

Stage three is where children will discover the butterfly chrysalis (also referred to as a pupa). While the science may be too advanced, students will be fascinated to learn that this ‘cocoon’ is made out of the caterpillar’s skin and that it only takes a week to ten days for the short, stubby caterpillar to metamorphose into a beautiful and graceful butterfly. The fourth stage will, of course, focus on the butterfly. Students will learn that it only takes this insect four hours to master flying and also that a butterfly’s life span is very short. Allie of No Time For Flash Cards suggests taking a field trip to an actual art museum then re-creating some of the childrens' favorite works! An easy style to adapt to your kids' or students' differing ability levels is inspired by Jackson Pollock's splatter paint.

Supplies You'll Need
- Cardboard, heavy art paper, or canvas
- Craft paint in assorted colors
- Kid's paint brushes

Before beginning the activity, transfer your paint into shallow containers and thin it out with a few drops of water. Also, designate an area of the classroom or schoolyard for this project, prepping the area with drop cloths or old sheets to minimize messes. In the week leading up to the craft, it may be prudent to inform parents of your project intentions so they can send a set of old clothes.

With the area, the supplies, and you're students properly prepped, you're ready to begin. Demonstrate how to carefully dip the paint brush into the paint and "fling" it at the blank paper. In the age of Harry Potter and other mystical pop culture characters, Allie suggests telling your students to "put a spell on the paper" in order to help them get the correct flinging motion.

Be sure to show your students pictures of Jackson Pollock's work and discuss how he made his paintings while you work. It may be helpful to show your students pictures of these insects to refresh their memories on what they look like and give them an idea of what qualities they should be searching for in their twig (e.g. slender, could have slight bend, etc.). (Note: At this time of year you may have difficulty finding maple keys. Shanti recommends collecting them during the fall and storing them for use in projects year round.)

Once back inside, set up a "gluing station" where your students bring their twigs and maple keys (in an orderly fashion!) to you or a teacher's aide to be glued together. Also at this time have your students choose two beads from the pile to be used as dragonfly eyes. Glue these on either side of the "head".

Back at their seats encourage your students to decorate their dragonfly. Invite your students to gather around the table so they can watch as you pour the water into the jars in a "stepped up" fashion (e.g. if you have six jars of the same size and shape, fill the first jar to it's 1/6 mark, the second to 1/3, the third to 1/2, and so on). Next, use a bit of paint to "color" the water in each glass with a different color.

Explain to your students how the different water levels will create different musical tones and demonstrate using a wooden spoon. (Note: This is a great science lesson!) Next, pull out a strip of card stock or a sentence strip and draw a long line down the center, adding circles along its entirety. With a paint brush and watercolors (that match the colored water in the jars), explain to your students that these circles are music notes and that you're going to write a song! When finished, play your song for the children and give them the supplies to write their own!
