It's always fun to get students in on classroom decorating and we think these adorable writing craftivities from Kim over at Saylor's Log are just the ticket for Thanksgiving! Not to mention, the handmade Indian corn border is sweet!

The First Thanksgiving!

  • Background: Cover the bulletin board with light blue background paper.
  • Title:We suggest a Thanksgiving quote! For example,

"He who thanks but with the lips Thanks but in part; The full, the true Thanksgiving Comes from the heart." ~J.A. Shedd

Use word processing software or personal cutting machine to create a sign or small bulletin board letters to compose the quote.
  • Border: Add a Thanksgiving themed trimmer to the top and sides of the board. Create your own border on the bottom; fringing green bulletin board paper and adding colorful Indian corn crafts {see craft resource list below}.
  • Decoration: 1) The Squanto & Pilgrim Writing Craftivities. Kim provided her kiddos with construction paper and character templates, inviting them to trace, cut, and assemble the various pieces to create Native American and pilgrim cutouts. Reflecting upon what they had learned abut the first Thanksgiving, her first grade students composed responses to the writing prompts, "How did Squanto help the pilgrims?" and "How were pilgrim boys/girls different from me?", and glued them to their construction paper characters. Arrange these characters on the board, alternating Native American cutouts and pilgrim boys/girls. 2) The Indian Corn. There are so many fun and colorful Indian corn crafts! We love the button Indian corn from All Kids Network and the beautiful finger paint Indian corn from Christian Games and Crafts. There's also tissue paper corn from Free Kids Crafts, actual dried bean corn from All Kids Network, and construction paper/art tissue paper mosaic corn from Sixty Second Parent!
