Next, trace and cut leaf shapes from construction paper in various shades of green. 2) The Flowers. Using various flower templates {drawn or found online}, trace spring flower cutouts onto construction paper in various spring shades. In the original design, the individual petals of the flowers were cut out\/separated in order to create two-tone flowers (i.e. light pink\/dark pink, light blue\/dark blue, etc.). Script the names of each student with a spring birthday onto a petal. Cut out green construction paper stems and leaves and mount the flowers to the board around the tree. [I only had four different prints - zebra, leopard, giraffe, and tiger - so I ended up with three cars of each print.] Next, I printed the clip art images from Stockberry Studios and Zenware Designs in various sizes and glued the animals to the train car cutouts. I decided to laminate them for good measure. To attach the name plates to the appropriate train cars, I used a hole punch and some ribbon, punching a hole at the bottom of each car, as well as the top of the name plate, and tying them together with the ribbon. In fact, it's been fun to see them perusing the names before class, during free time, etc. and they're always super careful. My assistant, Maddy, and I love helping our preschoolers find their name, as well as match the other name plates to their classmates.
