For example, if using red and blue (which are two colors that mix very well), fill your dishes accordingly: 1) three parts red, 2) three parts blue, 3) two parts red + one part blue, 4) one part red + two parts blue, 5) two parts red + one part white, 6) two parts blue + one part white, and any other combination you can think of! Once the glue has set (it will dry clear), have your students color the background and flower with oil pastels, paying special attention to shading and coloring mixing. Of the concepts they are exposed to during their elementary mathematics careers, this can be one of the most elusive, confusing, and challenging topics! Instruct them to create kite shapes from the colorful papers, then cut them apart, creating and labeling equivalent fractions (e.g. if a student cuts their kite into three strips, each piece equals one-third and should be designated with \"1\/3\"). Have your students create three or four kites, using school glue to adhere them to the blue background and markers to create 'tails'. The number of branches can be left up to the student, but make sure they draw a main branch 'coming out' from the side of the paper.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThen, ask them to paint their entire page using blue watercolor (they can paint right over the brown crayon). Some students will choose a lighter covering of blue by using more water, while others will paint over the area several times with less water to create a deeper blue. Then, piece-by-piece have them place a square of tissue paper around the end of their pencil, dip it in glue and stick it to one of their tree branches.
