Instead of allowing the themes to remain mutually exclusive, she incorporated the two inventing \"Creepy Contractions\"!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch1\u003eCreepy Contractions Activity\u003c\/h1\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYou can do this activity one of two ways: find a pre-designed haunted house coloring page and have your students build from there or provide construction paper for your students to design their own house. However you decide to do it, make sure the house design has plenty of windows.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan id=\"more\"\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\nEncourage your students to color or decorate their creations and cut them out. Next, have them carefully use scissors (kids safety scissors depending on their age) to create window flaps that will open out. This part may be tricky so make sure you're around to assist. With this successfully accomplished, mount the cutout onto a piece of construction paper (black, orange, or yellow to keep with the Halloween theme). As the glue dries, invite your students to use brainstorm a list of common contractions and the original words they're derived from.\n\u003cp\u003eOnce everything is set, have your students finish the exercise by neatly penning the contractions on the front of the house windows then open the flaps and write the original words on the construction paper underneath. Remind your students that the shiny film is important to the project, so cutting should be slow and mindful as the film has a tendency to peel away from the plastic disc.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAllow your students to experiment with patterns and piece placement on the frame, gluing their final projects together with craft glue and setting aside to dry. After the basic portrait shapes have been reconstructed, instruct your students to use the black marker to color in the face and other appropriate detailing. Remind your students to be careful as the tissue paper is not as strong as most mediums and could tear. Because of this, Barbro suggests the project be completed with third graders or older. Some students will choose a lighter covering of blue by using more water, while others will paint over the area several times with less water to create a deeper blue.
